The collection consists of correspondence, diaries, wills, writings and printed material. The correspondence is to and from various family members. One letter to Annie Disosway from R. in Olney, Maryland, describes in detail the Confederate troops coming to the family home. There are three diaries written by Annie Disosway. The 1854-1856 diary describes her move to New York, boarding school in Pennsylvania, and her family. Annie's second diary, 1860-1861, deals with her thoughts on the Civil War, her brother Willie's enlistment in the 1st New York Mounted Rifles, and his serious illness. She and her mother traveled to the camp of the Lincoln Cavalry (Camp Meigs) in Washington, D.C., to care for him, and many details of the camp and soldiers are given. Willie survived the illness but was killed on October 13, 1863. The third diary, 1891-1898, contains Annie's reminiscences of past Christmas seasons. A fourth diary, 1886-1915, was written by Annie's sister Louise and describes various family matters. Other writings include a school composition book by Winnona Adams, a handwritten newsletter edited by 16-year-old Louise Adams, and notes by Annie Disosway Adams regarding mental healing, the Iliad, French history, and her husband's death.

Annie Ryerss Disosway (b. 1838) was the daughter of Cornelius Ryerss Disosway (d.1888) and Eliza Wilkins Disosway (d.1897). The family including Annie, sisters Louise (b. 1840) and Mary, and brother William Wilkins (Willie, 1843-1863), moved from Baltimore, Maryland to New York City in 1854. Annie married Henry Kingsland Adams (d. 1899) and had two daughters, Louise (Loulie, b. 1876) and Winnona (Nannie, b. 1873).
